Equine Aromatherapy
Many years ago, when horses roamed over
wild terrain, they had the ability to medicate themselves, by eating wild herbs.
Now, horses are kept in fields that do not offer a choice of herbs, and they
are denied the chance to heal themselves in this way.
Essential Oils are highly concentrated extracts from plants, and have very powerful scents, and healing properties.
Do you ever after a stressful day, arrive home, and either have a nice soak in a scented bath, or light a fragranced candle? In that case you too are using aromas to help you relax and unwind.
Your horse will choose what oils he or she needs, if your horse is the nervous type, they may select violet leaf, rose or lavender, for their soothing properties, or if your horse suffers from COPD, he / she may select eucalyptus or spearmint, for their benefits on the respiratory system. Often horses with similar complaints will select very different oils, as they have the ability to choose, and will know what they need.
The
oils that your horse selects are blended into a gel, which is then applied to
the body, either to the affected area, such as the mane of a sweet itch sufferer,
or to an arthritic joint, or for emotional problems, the gel can be applied
to the neck or muzzle.
Many horse owners have reported benefits to both physical and emotional conditions, after the use of essential oils. These conditions include mud fever, sweet itch, sarcoids, spooking, joint stiffness and nervousness.
